“Downside that a Trump Justice Department leader would conspire to overthrow the will of the people,” Schumer tweeted. “The Inspector General of the Ministry of Justice must immediately open an investigation into this attempted sedition.”
Schumer added that the Senate would “move forward” with an impeachment trial of Trump for his role in inciting the deadly Jan.6 riot on Capitol Hill. The trial is scheduled to begin the week of February 8.

The remarks come a day after The New York Times published an explosive report indicating that Trump tried to impeach his acting attorney general in a bid to overturn the results of the presidential election in Georgia.
The plan involved replacing Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen with Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department lawyer who was seen to be more willing to pressure Georgian politicians to overturn the race results in that country. Rosen had refused to support Trump’s disputed claims that voter fraud cost him the election
The plot only fell apart after a group of Department of Justice (DOJ) officials discovered the plan and threatened to resign en masse if Rosen was ousted.
The report was just the latest revelation of Trump’s electoral attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election he lost to President Biden. Trump had insulted his loss, citing unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud, and sought to overturn it by filing dozens of lawsuits, pressuring state lawmakers to send his supporters to college instead of Biden voters, and even relying on the former vice president.
