Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer suggested Monday that President Biden consider declaring a climate change emergency.

“It might be a good idea for President Biden to call it a climate emergency,” the New York Democrat told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

Schumer apparently suggested that Biden do for the climate what President Trump did for the border – declare a national emergency to bypass legislative debate and use executive power.

“He can do a lot, a lot of things under emergency powers … he could do without legislation,” said the Senate leader.

“Trump used this emergency for a stupid wall, which was not an emergency. But if there ever was an emergency, the climate is one,” Schumer added.

Republicans have warned that Trump using a national emergency to handle immigration and fund the border wall could set a troubling precedent.

“If the national emergency today is border security … tomorrow the national emergency could be climate change,” Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Told CNBC in 2019.

Biden has already used the powers of his new office to push forward a number of environmental measures. In some of its early decrees, the United States joined the Paris Climate Agreement and canceled the Keystone XL pipeline permit.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Democrats control the Senate, House, and White House. But most laws still have to pass the 60-vote hurdle. Senior climate advisers also said the Biden administration was stepping up the pressure on China to toughen its greenhouse gas emissions targets.

John Kerry, Biden’s special climate envoy, said a recent pledge from China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, was “not good enough”.
