Scott Brooks to assist Chauncey Billups on the Trail Blazers bench

Scott Brooks will become the Portland Trail Blazers’ senior assistant under the direction of head coach Chauncey Billups. Brooks, 55, has been the head coach of the Washington Wizards and Oklahoma City Thunder, running his own locker room for 12 of the past 13 years. He was also an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted the news, calling Brooks an “important addition” to the staff at Billups.

Brooks compiled a record of 532-414 in his dozen seasons as a head coach, a winning percentage of 0.557. He’s 49-48 overall in the playoffs, leading the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2011-12 where his team, consisting of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook, lost to the Miami Heat.

Brooks recently served with the Wizards, where he was 183-207 (0.469) in five seasons. Washington went 34-38 last year, leading to Brooks’ sacking.

Having an experienced head coach next to Billups is considered advantageous as Billups has no experience as a head coach and only has one year as an assistant.

Brooks played in the NBA between 1988 and 1998, averaging 4.9 points and 2.4 assists in 13.6 minutes per game in 680 appearances.
