Born in Ohio in 1943, Walker reached idol status with the Walker Brothers in the 1960s, with their single "The sun does not matter" at number one in the UK.

Walker then released 14 solo albums, beginning with "Scott", "Scott 2", "Scott 3" and "Scott 4", critically acclaimed in the 1960s. The 4AD label describes it in a statement as " one of the most revered innovators on the high side of creative music, whose influence on many artists has been freely recognized ".

The singer also produced Pulp's "We Love Life" album in 2001 and composed several scores for the film, the latest for Natalie Portman's "Vox Lux" in 2018.

In 2017, the BBC staged a tribute to Walker's music at London's Royal Albert Hall, while Faber published a book of his lyrics, "Sundog," the following year.

Artists, including Thom Yorke of Radiohead, paid tribute to Walker at the announcement of his death. "He had a huge influence on Radiohead and me, showing me how to use my voice and my words," Yorke wrote on Twitter.
