At his end-of-season press conference, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll singled out the inside offensive line as an area in which the team can “grow and improve,” and after the start of the new league year, Seattle wasted little time taking a step to get better there, acquiring guard Gabe Jackson in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders that became official over the weekend with all commercial conditions fulfilled.
To acquire Jackson, the Seahawks send their fifth-round pick in this year’s draft to Las Vegas.
Jackson, 29, started 99 of 100 games played in his seven-year career with the Raiders, including all 16 games last season. He played left guard his first two seasons, then moved to right guard for the last five years.
With Mike Iupati, the Seattle starting left guard for the past two seasons, retiring earlier this offseason, Jackson would appear to be a likely candidate to take over that post unless the Seahawks think the best combination of guards is to move Damien Lewis from right to left to keep Jackson in the position he most recently played in his career.
Jackson intends to help bolster pass protection for Seattle in particular, having not allowed a sack in 2020, according to Pro Football Focus. In four of Jackson’s seven seasons, the Raiders finished in the NFL top 10 for the fewest sacks allowed, including a 2016 season in which the Raiders gave up 18 league sacks with Jackson being named. substitute for the Pro-Bowl.
