Seahawks QB Russell Wilson could miss November Packers game

Chances are, on November 14, when Seattle plays at Lambeau Field, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will not be on the field to face the Green Bay Packers. The former Badger quarterback injured his middle finger in his throwing hand yesterday after hitting Rams defenseman Aaron Donald’s arm while following a pass, causing Wilson to withdraw from the game.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported this morning Wilson had come down from Seattle to Los Angeles to meet with a hand specialist and was believed to have a mallet finger, a tear in the extensor tendon that prevents someone from straightening the injured finger due damage around the fingertip. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler later reported that the Seahawks expected Wilson to miss at least a month and up to eight weeks with the injury.

Rapoport added later that Wilson had surgery to put two screws in his finger today because the initial diagnoses were found to be correct. Wilson, who since joining the league has gone on the fifth longest consecutive start streak in NFL history as a quarterback, is now expected to be out for one to two months, as replacement Geno Smith will have to advance the 2-3 Seahawks.

Smith scored 10 of 17 for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception off the bench against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night football, with the interception on a play where wide receiver Tyler Lockett fell. For his career, Smith posted a 73.0 passer rating and made just two starts since the end of his 2014 season, when the New York Jets finished 3-10. Smith ultimately lost his starting job in New York in 2015 when teammate IK Enemkpali broke his jaw this summer and Ryan Fitzpatrick stepped in to replace him.

The four to eight week recovery window for Wilson’s surgery is particularly attractive for the Green Bay Packers, who face the Seahawks in 37 days. Seattle will have a week off before his Nov. 14 exit with the Packers, meaning Wilson’s first return from the injury could be against Green Bay, although it is not promised that Wilson will be healthy enough to prepare for the game.
