Russell Wilson’s finger injury has turned Seattle’s season upside down.
Wilson underwent surgery on his injured finger on Friday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported. Wilson is expected to be away for about six weeks due to the complicated nature of the operation, which required screws to stabilize Wilson’s finger, according to Rapoport.
Wilson was injured in Thursday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams when his hand cut the wrist of defensive tackle Aaron Donald while tracking Wilson in a pass attempt. The x-rays on Wilson’s finger came back negative, but after an MRI on Friday morning, Wilson underwent the procedure performed by Dr. Steven Shin.
Geno Smith is the Seahawks replacement and is expected to replace Wilson.
Wilson tried to overcome the injury Thursday night, but quickly found he was unable to continue, losing three goals before handing the reins to Smith. The veteran backup led a 10-game, 98-yard touchdown on his first possession, but threw a crushing interception that ended Seattle’s chances of a comeback.
At 2-3 in the ultra-competitive NFC West, Wilson’s loss could prove devastating to the Seahawks’ hopes to fight in 2021. Smith will be asked to keep them afloat, starting with a date at the prime time with the Steelers in nine days.
