A sealed copy of the classic NES Super Mario Bros. sold for an incredible $ 660,000 at Heritage Auctions on Friday, more than quadrupling the previous record for the most expensive game of all time.
It is not the first time Super Mario Bros. held the record: A mint condition copy of the US version of the game sold for $ 114,000 in July 2020 (which broke the record of $ 100,150 set by another copy of Super Mario Bros. in February 2019). In November, however, another title set a new record: a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 sold for $ 156,000, making it the most expensive video game ever sold to date.

Not only is this the best plastic sealed copy with a perforated cardboard label we have ever offered of any black box title, it is also the oldest sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. we have already had the opportunity to offer. This is only the fourth version of Super Mario Bros. never produced, and its production window was remarkably short. Just to paint a better picture of how this really was short – the domestic version of the console came in mid to late 1986, and the black box games released for that version didn’t have the code “Game Pak.” NES-GP ”. It should be mentioned that Nintendo managed to add the trademark symbol to the Nintendo Entertainment System on its game boxes in early 1987. That certainly doesn’t leave much time for this variant to be produced in between!
