Sean McVay officially declares who was the ‘step’ in the Rams camp

It seemed like the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive staff plan throughout the offseason was to roll with Austin Corbett as starting center and Bobby Evans as a substitute at right guard. That was the belief until Monday, when Brian Allen had clearly taken on the starting center role, with Corbett returning to right guard, as he had been throughout 2020.

The Rams released their unofficial depth chart on Tuesday, with Corbett in the starting center and Allen in the second team, but I wouldn’t put any stock there. Head coach Sean McVay appeared on the Rams camp live today with LA Rams broadcaster JB Long and was asked “Do you have any more answers or questions regarding who is going to bring this first football to Matthew Stafford against the Chicago Bears? ”

Here is McVay’s response:

I think we’re starting to get some clarification on this, Brian Allen is really starting to assert himself and Austin Corbett has been outstanding at the right guard. Bobby Evans is another guy who we expect him to be able to play at a high level if need be; but Brian did a really good job and was going to continue to evaluate him but if we were to play now he (Allen) did a good job and would be our center.

In his post-practice statement on Tuesday, McVay noted that if you’re looking for one of those “step-up” players from training camp this year, Brian Allen would be that guy, according to Kenneth Arthur of Turf Show Times.

Allen last appeared in the 2019 season where he started nine games for the Rams, but has suffered injuries since then. It has been a struggle for him during this 2019 season, but McVay has repeatedly reiterated that he has done a good job at camp.

I think it might have more to do with the lack of confidence in Evans than with Corbett not coming back to center well. Remember, Evan’s natural position is the offensive tackle and that’s why he was drafted. Thankfully, Corbett’s versatility gave them plenty of options as to which route they could take, and Allen’s rise to become a starting center again after such a difficult start to their career could prove to be camp history. .
