Sean Paul says recent comments he made on a Jamaican radio station regarding Jay-Z and Beyoncé were taken out of context.
Paul recently appeared on the Too Live Crew, Action and the Burgerman radio show, where he allegedly argued the host’s theory that Jay was uncomfortable with their 2003 “Baby Boy” collaboration because he didn’t like them spending time together. But in a new interview with, HotNewHipHop Paul set the record straight.
“It was a radio show here in Jamaica and I receive it regularly. When I go to Texas, too, radio shows there, I don’t know what it is, people are like, ‘So tell me …’ and it happens to that part of that interview where they say to themselves: “ What happened with you and Beyoncé? Nothing really happened. The hit song was dope, ”explained Paul.
Paul went on to explain what he actually meant from his comments. “You know, some of them made their decision. It is whatever. Sometimes with interviews you can say, ‘I’d rather not talk about it,’ but then people would think something was going on, ‘he said. “So I was trying to defend it like, ‘Hey no, but weird things happened, that’s probably why there were rumors,’ but people are leaving out ‘that’s probably why there are had rumors. ‘
He also spoke vaguely about what happened during the filming of the video, in which his role was filmed separately from Bey’s. “There were some weird things that happened on stage with our performance, with the video. I know there was a headline that said, “Oh, Jay-Z didn’t want me there. It had nothing to do with him as far as I was concerned, ”explained Paul. “[Beyoncé’s] his own artist directed by his own manager. They were going out at the time. They were not yet married. I don’t think he would have influenced whatever his vision was. He is a very determined person. She is very precise in her thoughts and movements and she works very hard. It was probably his vision.
Paul also explained why he and Bey rarely performed the song together. “So what I talked about in this interview is that there were some weird things that happened and that’s probably why people got rumors about it because a few times on scene we tried to play [‘Baby Boy’] correctly, ”he said. “There have been problems with the ProTools, which usually doesn’t happen. There were problems with my microphone during a performance in Germany. This is probably why people started talking [it]. “
Paul added that “nothing ever happened with her and me except for a hit song,” adding that he “never said anything about what they tell me to say.”
The fact that Paul didn’t appear in the video alongside Bey “exploded into some crazy stuff,” the Jamaican artist said in 2012. And later when Paul didn’t perform the song with her on MTV VMA 2003, many thought Jay-Z had kept Paul out of the limelight. But Paul denied the gossip, explaining that he knew Hov longer than he knew Bey and that it was out of proportion.
“The general public blew it up in some things. I just stayed silent about it for years because it was doing its job. There was just a lot of controversy, ”Paul said. “She’s an amazing artist, the song was # 1 for almost nine weeks so it was a very special moment for me and for dancehall.”
