The active search for four fishermen who have been missing since the boat they were in sank off the coast of Massachusetts was suspended Tuesday evening after a search of more than 38 hours, the Coast Guard said.
“The decision to suspend a search is never easy,” Coast Guard Captain Wesley Hester said in a statement. “We offer our condolences to the friends and relatives of these fishermen during this difficult time.”
The 82-foot commercial fishing vessel, the Emmy Rose, sank about 20 miles off Provincetown early Monday, the Coast Guard said.
The Boston Coast Guard received a notification from the ship’s emergency beacon at around 1:30 a.m., the owner called the crew on a satellite phone but got no response, and researchers found debris and a life raft empty, but no sign of men or ship. said the Coast Guard.
The search involved planes and boats and covered approximately 2,066 square miles, the guard said. The Emmy Rose was based in Portland, Maine.
