Season 3 of the series is adapted for HBO with Sarah Koenig and LeBron James in EP

By The Hollywood Reporter, season three of the hit podcast Serial potentially heading to HBO as a limited series. Host Sarah Koenig and LeBron James will co-lead the project, which is currently in development. Writer Shola Amoo, who wrote and directed Sundance darling The last tree, is on the verge of producing, directing and writing the screenplay for the yet-to-be-titled series.

According to THR, the show goes “Follow a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating as the potential series illuminates the faulty inner workings of an average American courthouse and how the system affects everyone it touches, from cops lawyers and citizens accused and victims of crimes.

The podcast, created by This American Life, has become a kind of breeding ground for possible large-scale HBO adaptations. The immediately popular first season of the audio fixture – which followed the complicated case of Adnan Syed and the murder of Hae Min Lee – was originally opted for an adaptation as part of a bidding war. HBO ended up producing a four-part documentary titled The case against Adnan Syed, which was nominated for an Emmy. An offshoot of Serial, Beautiful white parents, receives pilot processing with Issa Rae and Adam McKay attached as executive producers.
