Spoil alert! The following contains details of the "Game of Thrones" series finale, Season 8, Episode 6, "The Iron Throne". Read our recap of Season 8, Episode 5 here.

This is not what we signed.

When creating "Game of Thrones" eight years ago, it was immediately clear that the series was something different. It was a story that broke the conventions of the fantasy genre, not one that was slaves to them. Yes, the "Thrones" and the series were inspired by J.R.R. "The Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien, but they also subverted this trilogy. We all know why. Ned Stark lost his mind. The red wedding killed Robb and Catelyn. The mountain has killed the viper. Tragedy and injustice have been incorporated into the series' identity as dragons and battles.

But this is not the show that aired his latest episode Sunday night. In the last episode, "The Iron Throne", "Thrones" was unrecognizable. It was hacky; it was cliché. Each standing character received a saccharine coda. It was too simple, too clean, even with a major death and a surprise candidate at the Iron Throne. Closure is one thing, but dilation attempts are another.

"The Iron Throne" would have been a nice ending for another TV show. This landing would have been comforting and satisfying for a series that had long been warming hearts. But over the years, "Thrones" has been a story in which the good guys did not win and the bad guys did not benefit from their success. The world that writers built was not fair and good people suffered for no reason. It was not a particularly rosy theme, but it was one of the reasons why the series had such a success. why he felt like he could be told despite his setting from another world. It was never a fairy tale. It was as messy and broken as our world is now.

"Iron Throne" is an episode that will be part of the most controversial final series of all time, in the same camp as "Lost", "Dexter" or "Battlestar Galactica". For many fans, it's probably enough. After all, the Stark brothers and sisters have found happiness, security and their place in the world, Tyrion is the king's hand, Sam is a maester and, heck, even Podrick Payne is now a knight. All who were good had their reward. Dany has had his life for his crimes. And there is even an argument to be made that, looking for a happy after-all, "Thrones" has subverted the expectations of everyone waiting for a bloodbath.

But that's not what "Iron Throne" did. He did not move away elegantly in another lane, he detached himself from a cliff. And back on the series will never be the same again.

Say goodbye to the "Throne":
