The Seattle Kraken will not select Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price in the expansion draft, a source told ESPN on Wednesday.
Price, who has just led Montreal to the Stanley Cup final, has waived his lock-in clause to make himself available for the Kraken expansion draft, which takes place Wednesday night. Price made the decision, sources say, as he is unsure whether he will be available to start next season due to injuries and wanted to help protect Jake Allen, the team’s alternate goalkeeper.
Price is due to see a specialist in New York on Thursday to assess his knee and hip injuries and determine if he needs surgery.
Seattle general manager Ron Francis has been given the nod to spend the cap per property, but Price’s $ 10.5 million cap is reportedly rich, and the 33-year-old is under contract for five more seasons. Price is also set to receive a bonus of $ 11 million in September.
If Price had joined the Kraken, he might have been the franchise’s first face, just like Marc-André Fleury with the Golden Knights. There was speculation Price would want to play for Seattle given that his offseason home is in Kelowna, BC, and his wife, Angela, is from Kennewick, Washington.
The Kraken have signed a three-year contract with Chris Driedger, which will be their selection among the Florida Panthers, sources say. Seattle is likely to select other more affordable goalies to surround Driedger, such as Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek.
