So much for that.
What was supposed to be an exciting and suspenseful night turned out to be a disappointment. Ahead of Wednesday night’s NHL expansion draft at Seattle Kraken, all selections – except for the Red Wings – were disclosed.
Why did this happen? Well, every player selected – along with their agent and front office – were made aware of the selection, meaning “leaks were inevitable”, according to Arpon Basu of The Athletic.
And the leaks have come in numbers.
The biggest scenario of the day was the Kraken’s choice to pass up goalie Carey Price. The 33-year-old has just led Montreal to the Stanley Cup final and has waived his lock-in clause to facilitate a possible transfer. However, the Kraken passed on their injury risk and cap of $ 10.5 million over the next five years, choosing Cale Fleury instead.
Another surprising development was that Seattle chose to pass Vladimir Tarasenko, instead of taking Vince Dunn from the Blues. The 29-year-old forward has requested a trade, but with shoulder issues and a cap of $ 7.5 million for two more years, St. Louis will keep him and try to trade him for assets.
The Islanders allowed the Kraken to take Jordan Eberle, who could become Seattle’s most talented forward. Seattle caught up with Eberle on Josh Bailey after the Islands chose to protect fourth liners Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck.
Chances are the Islanders traded assets, so the Kraken was forced to take Eberle, according to The Athletic, meaning Lou Lamoriello and his $ 23.6 million in cap space – if Eberle is indeed selected – could have a big signing or a trade in mind.
In other local news, the Rangers will lose Colin Blackwell and the Devils will lose Nathan Bastian. The Kraken will also hook Will Borgen to the Sabers.
There have been other notable omissions – such as Jakub Voracek and James van Riemsdyk of the Flyers, Ryan Johansen and Matt Duchene of the Predators, pending free agent Gabriel Landeskog of the Avalanche, Malcolm Subban of the Blackhawks, Jake Bean of the Hurricanes. and a few talented Lightning players – meaning the Kraken are focused on maintaining the salary cap space for years to come.
“The only thing that we think is extremely, extremely important in this environment is overhead space,” Kraken general manager Ron Francis told Sportsnet ahead of the expansion draft.
