A 37-year-old man working as a security guard at an Apple store in New York City has been stabbed multiple times over a dispute over wearing a mask inside the store to comply with security policies of Covid-19.

New York City Police responded to the West 14th Street location in Manhattan around 6:20 p.m.

The security guard told police he was stabbed once in the left arm and once in the forehead with a knife by an unknown man. The man then fled to a nearby metro station.

The injured security guard was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

“I saw him come out on the stretcher and I was like ouch,” Kimberly, a young woman who works nearby and knew the security guard by the way, told NBC New York. “Everyone was in a great stir, crying, everyone was in shock.”

The Apple store closed about two and a half hours earlier as employees spoke to police investigating the incident and gathered evidence, NBC New York reported. Workers from a cleaning company arrived later Friday evening to clean up the trail of blood that remained in the store several hours after the stabbing.

The investigation is continuing, but no one was arrested in connection with the assault on Saturday morning, police told NBC News in an email.
