The War on Drugs returned late at night to deliver a virtual performance of “Arms Like Boulders” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
After creating their new song “Ocean of Darkness” via a similar virtual setup on an October episode of Tonight’s show, the band dug deep into the catalog for their last appearance, playing a track from their 2008 debut album Wagonwheel Blues. The #PlayAtHome performance featured the group’s six members on stringed instruments, with five guitars and a mandolin.
War on Drugs’ Late Show visit was in support of their recently released live album Live drugs, featuring tracks from over 40 hard drives recorded at the group’s performances through the years. The LP includes tracks from the band’s four studio albums as well as a cover of “Accidentally Like a Martyr” by Warren Zevon.
“As a group leader, I always want to know where a song can go,” singer Adam Granduciel said in a statement. “Even though we recorded it, mastered it, released it and shot it, that doesn’t mean we just have to do it the same way forever… It feels like it’s kind of a reset, of to be able to produce something that is a very good interpretation of how we interpret our music live. Even though this recording comes from a year of touring, that’s really how these six guys evolved as a band from 2014 to 2019. ”
