A recent note for an unannounced Virtua Fighter game could point to an imminent rebirth of Sega’s fighting game series. In March, the Korea Games Evaluation and Administration Committee assessed Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate showdown for PlayStation 4, a version that could be linked to Sega’s esports ambitions.
According to the note, spotted by Gematsu, Virtua Hunter 5 final confrontation is also known by another name: Virtua Fighter Sports. In September, Sega teased a project named “Virtua Fighter × esports,” but didn’t announce a specific game or platform title. Sega said at the time that Virtua Fighter “will be rebooted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of SEGA. A teaser video for the project showed footage from Virtua Fighter tournaments and ended with a photo of Akira, the face of the fighting game franchise.
Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown would be the (somewhat) logical continuation of the most recent entry into the franchise: Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. This version of the game was released in arcades in 2010 and brought to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.
In February, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada said he wanted a representative from Sega to participate in the next episode of the Japanese Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable, a YouTube panel show that featured developers from Capcom, Bandai Namco, Arc System Works, SNK, and Arika. Harada didn’t explain why he specifically wanted Sega to appear, but he may get a glimpse of the publisher’s fighting game plans. The organizers of the Japanese Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable have not announced a date for the third episode of the stream.
