Elgin James (“Little Birds”, “Mayan’s MC”) will write and direct the film produced by Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti.

Selena Gomez is set to scale a big screen biopic about Peruvian climber and social entrepreneur Silvia Vásquez-Lavado.

Titled In the shadow of the mountain, the film is based on the upcoming memoir of the same name by Vásquez-Lavado, who became the first Peruvian woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest and the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits, a challenge to climb the highest mountain on each continent.

One Community, Scott Budnick’s impact-driven co-fundraiser, who supports last year’s lead role of Michael B. Jordan Just mercy, produced alongside Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti and her Tempesta Films banner.

The filmmakers recruited Elgin James, the writer-director of Little birds and co-creator of FX ‘Mayan’s MC, to write and direct In the shadow of the mountain.

Vásquez-Lavado’s inspirational story falls directly into the wheelhouse of One Community as she suffered abuse and neglect in her childhood who found healing and power in mountaineering. Vásquez-Lavado’s work in survivor circles has been praised, especially his efforts to organize hikes to Mt. Everest base camp for other women who have suffered abuse.

“Silvia is a force of nature,” said Gigliotti. “Scott and I are thrilled to be working with Elgin and Selena to tell this story of resilience, courage, adventure and humanity.”

Budnick added, “We are delighted to get down to work to bring Silvia’s incredible and inspiring story to life.”

Gigliotti, who won the Oscar for Best Picture for Shakespeare in love, has produced acclaimed actress vehicles such as The reader, Silver Linings Playbook and Hidden figures. His Tempesta business is supported by Starlight Entertainment.

In the shadow of the mountain The publication is scheduled for winter 2022.

Gomez is best known as a multi-platinum and award-winning musical pop star, but she has steadily expanded her acting career in recent years working with writers like Harmony Korine on spring breakers and Jim Jarmusch on The dead don’t die. She will produce In the shadow of the mountain through its July Moon Productions. Vásquez-Lavado and Lara Love Hardin of Idea Architects participate in the executive production.

Sonya Lockett, of One Community, will oversee the film’s impact campaign as part of the company’s unique mandate. Budnick (The hangover franchise) left the film industry in 2013 to work in the philanthropic space on criminal justice reform. He returned in 2018 to found One Community with a commitment to “changing hearts and minds on critical issues of equity and equality.” The company, whose backers include Wes Edens, owner of Endeavor Content and Milwaukee Bucks, designs strong social impact campaigns to amplify and align the work of philanthropy and political experts and convert public empathy into action. A community is currently developing Ghost of King Leopold as a Ben Affleck executive vehicle. Lauren of Normandy will be the shepherd In the shadow of the mountain for a community.

Gomez is replaced by WME, Lighthouse Management + Media and the Ziffren Brittenham law firm. Vásquez-Lavado is managed by WME and Idea Architects. And James is represented by WME, Jamie Patricof in Hunting Lane and lawyer Tara Cole.
