The father of the late singer Selena and Netflix is being sued by a Hollywood producer who claims he left it out in the cold when it came to producing the new TV series.
Moctesuma Esparza filed documents suing Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, claiming he had broken a deal signed in 1995 giving him rights to the life stories of the music of Queen de Tejano and various members of her family.
In the documents, obtained by TMZ, Esparza says the deal included a movie as well as other remakes. He says he helped produce the 1997 biopic “Selena” with Jennifer lopez … and because of that success, he claims Abraham spoke to him in 1998 about the prospect of producing a TV series, miniseries, or second movie.
Esparza is also suing Selena’s sister, Suzette … and in the costume, he claims to have met her and Abraham to discuss a script he developed for a “Young Selena” project, but nothing came of it. He says he was shocked when he saw in 2018 that Abraham had licensed the rights to Selena on Netflix.
When he tried to get answers on how Abraham got the go-ahead from Warner Bros. – the studio behind the movie “Selena” – Esparza says he got the coldness of WB. Netflix is expected to air “Selena: The Series” next month.
Esparza sues Abraham and Suzette for breach of contract and Netflix for ignoring the deal he had with Abraham. Esparza says he’s lost at least $ 1 million in damages. We have contacted Netflix … so far no word in return.
