Semi Ojeleye knew returning to Celtics depended on Gordon Hayward’s decision

Semi Ojeleye, like many of us, was waiting for Gordon Hayward to decide whether to accept or decline the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics.

Ojeleye gave the decision a lot of thought, as his status with the team was on hold until Hayward finally agreed to sign and trade with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Celtics then agreed to secure Ojeleye’s contract for the coming season. But if Hayward had decided to stay in Boston, Ojeleye probably wouldn’t be there.

“They had the option of giving me up or bringing me back, and I think they were waiting for Gordon and a few other pieces to find out what they were going to do first,” Ojeleye told reporters on Wednesday, via MassLive’s Tom Westerholm. “And after that, on the last day, they told me they were going to bring me back. It’s a company. At the end of the day, I repeat once again, God brought me here for a reason. I’m just going to keep working and wherever I land, wherever I play, I’m going to give my all and drop everything else where it can.
