The Senate voted in favor of Mayorkas’ appointment on Thursday afternoon. He received the support of the Sens Republicans. Mitt Romney from Utah, Susan Collins from Maine, Rob Portman from Ohio, Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia and Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska.
Mayorkas, who served as deputy secretary of DHS under the Obama administration, is a Cuban-born lawyer and one of the main architects of the Deferred Action Immigration Program for Child Arrivals.
Biden is expected to announce executive actions related to immigration on Tuesday, including the establishment of a task force to reunite migrant families separated at the border by the Trump administration. Mayorkas is expected to lead the task force.
The task force’s deployment was originally scheduled for Friday, but was delayed due to Senate Republicans’ objections to its appointment. It’s unclear whether the delay will affect the timing of Biden’s announcement.
