Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Said Thursday he had “requested and received” the resignation of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger.
Driving the news: Capitol Hill law enforcement and security have come under heavy criticism for their response to Wednesday’s siege on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Trump.
- Authorities were overwhelmed by rioters who stormed the Capitol building and entered the Senate chamber, as well as the offices of some lawmakers. At least four people have died as a result of the siege, officials said.
- Earlier Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) called for Stenger to be sacked when Democrats take a majority in the upper house – if Stenger had not already resigned.
The big picture: Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving has given his resignation notice, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said Thursday.
And after: Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms Jennifer Hemingway will serve as the Acting Sergeant-at-Arms, McConnell said in a statement.
- “I thank Jennifer in advance for her service as we begin to consider the serious failures that occurred yesterday and continue and strengthen our preparations for a safe and successful inauguration on January 20,” said McConnell.
Several lawmakers have also sworn to investigate law enforcement response to the violent breach of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
