Senator Cory Booker, DN.J., said that after the House voted to impeach President Trump last week, he expects the Senate to go to trial fairly quickly.
Booker told NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday that if Republican leaders are to agree to start the process, he is confident they will act.
DEMOCRATS WILL NOT COMMIT TO THE IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE AFTER SOUNDING AN ALARM ABOUT TRUMP
“You need the Republican leader to cooperate in terms of time agreements, but I fully expect that to happen as quickly as possible,” Booker said.
With Trump’s term ending at noon on Wednesday, Senate rules prevent the trial from starting until he is removed from office. Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Issued a statement claiming it was unconstitutional for the Senate to try someone who is no longer in power.
“The founders designed the impeachment process as a means to impeach public officials – not an investigation against private citizens,” Cotton said. “The Constitution presupposes an office from which a dismissed official can be removed.”
Not only does Booker disagree, but he said the real problem will be if the Senate does not act.

“I think it’s constitutionally dangerous not to continue,” Booker said. “We just saw a President of the United States trying to undermine the peaceful transition of power, trying to challenge a free and fair election, and he and his agents from earlier moments, from his son to his lawyer, searched a crowd for attack the Capitol So basically I believe the Senate has an obligation to act.
Booker insisted it wasn’t just a political attack on Trump.
“There must be accountability for actions that are so serious, that pose such a serious threat – not just to our constitution but to the erosion of our nation,” he said.

In the same program, Republican Nancy Mace explained why she opposes impeachment when she is firmly opposed to Trump’s actions. The newly elected South Carolina MP said the biggest problem was that House Democrats had ignored the proper process to rush into impeachment.
“I have stated unequivocally that the House has every right to impeach the President of the United States, but the fact that we have bypassed the judiciary, we have not opened an investigation, that we have bypassed due process , which set a dangerous constitutional precedent for others, “she said.
