Sen. Lindsey Graham told a rally of Republicans he hoped former President Donald Trump would run in 2024.
“I don’t think Trump is listening. He can be. I hope President Trump will run again, ”Graham (R-SC) said at a Michigan Republican leadership conference on Saturday, according to the Detroit News.
Trump, who has been coy about whether he would toss his hat in the ring, came the closest to acknowledging a run in an interview on Friday.
David Brody of Real America’s Voice Network asked him if he could name a reason why he wouldn’t.
“Well, I guess a bad call from a doctor or something, right?” Trump responded. “I will say it happens with people. “
“So things happen, by God they happen,” added Trump. “But you know, I feel so good and I hate what’s happening to our country.”
Graham, the 2016 Republican presidential candidate, has been a staunch ally of the former president in the Senate.
But that relationship hit rocky ground last week when a new book claimed Graham failed to find Trump’s allegations of fraud regarding the 2020 election to be credible.
Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Graham and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) reviewed the claims but walked away “unconvinced”, according to “Peril,” the book of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
Trump has attacked both for not having his back.
“Mike Lee, Lindsey Graham and all the other Republicans who did not want to fight for the presidency of the United States, who would have included at least four additional Republican senators, two in Georgia, one in Michigan, one in Arizona, are leaving Democrats get away with the biggest election hoax in history – total scam work, ”Trump said in a statement.
Graham did not respond to Trump’s comments in the speech to Republicans, according to the Detroit News, but said he and the former president had “found common ground.”
“People ask me, ‘What happened between you and Trump? “” Graham said at the rally. “I’m saying we’ve found common ground. I have come to love him and he loves her.
“It allows us to go through 18 holes,” he continued, noting the many times they’ve played golf together. “The first nine, I’ll tell him why I love him. The last nine are the reason he loves her.
Graham also credited Trump with restoring “order” to the southern border, cutting taxes, appointing a series of conservative judges and enabling rapid development of the coronavirus vaccine.
He said the vaccine is “perhaps the most significant medical achievement in the country’s history.”
And Graham said that while 92% of people hospitalized with the deadly disease are not fully immunized, getting the vaccine is a personal decision.
“You decide if you want to get the vaccine. I took it, ”said Graham, who tested positive for the coronavirus last month despite being vaccinated. “President Trump, thank you for making it available to the world. You have saved a lot of lives.
