Senator Rand Paul and ABC News presenter George Stephanopoulos had a heated exchange on Sunday over President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election – with Republican lawmakers claiming there were “two sides” to every story .
The tense “This Week” interview began with Stephanopoulos asking Paul if he would admit the election was “not stolen.”
“What I would say is that the debate over whether or not there was fraud, we never had a court presentation where we actually looked at the evidence. Most of the cases have been dismissed for lack of standing, which is a procedural way of not actually hearing the question, ”the Kentucky lawmaker replied, adding that he thinks some of the cases could“ go as far back as the Supreme Court “.
Paul then asked if people had voted twice, or the dead or illegal aliens had voted, saying, “we should get to the bottom of this”.
“I have to stop you there. No election is perfect. But 86 challenges were filed by President Trump and his allies in court, all of which were dismissed. Each state has certified the results, ”said Stephanopoulos.
After some back and forth between the two men, Stephanopoulos pointed out that former Attorney General Bill Barr said there was no “evidence of widespread fraud” and asked, “Can’t you just tell the words, this election was not stolen? “
“What I would say is if we want more confidence in our elections, and 75% of Republicans agree with me, then we have to look at electoral integrity and we have to see if we can restore confidence in the elections, ”said the senator.
Stephanopoulos retorted that the reason 75% of Republicans agree is because they were “fed a big lie” by the president that the election was stolen.
“George, where you go wrong is people coming from the liberal side like you, you immediately say everything is a lie instead of saying there are two sides to everything,” Paul said, adding that the ABC News anchor was trying to be “absolute” without hearing the opinions of the other side.
“But you say it’s all a lie,” said Paul.
“You said something that wasn’t true,” Stephanopoulos said.
“You say we are all liars. You are just saying that we are all liars, ”continued Paul.
“I said it was a lie – that the election was stolen,” Stephanopoulos replied.
Paul said he voted to certify the Electoral College vote on Jan. 6 because “it would be a mistake for Congress to overrule that,” but he believes the election has yet to be considered.
“And I will work hard to fix it. And I won’t be scared of people who say, “Oh, you’re a liar,” he said.
He then blamed the media for calling all Republicans “liars” and called on Stephanopoulos to interview someone from “the other side” without fitting in “the story to say that we are all liars” .
“The investigations that have taken place have shown that there was not enough fraud to change the results of this election. This has been certified by all states, ”said Stephanopoulos.
“I have accepted state certifications. But that doesn’t mean that I think there hasn’t been fraud and that there aren’t issues that need to be investigated. And that doesn’t mean the law wasn’t broken, ”Paul said.
