The Biden administration’s consideration of a travel ban due to the coronavirus pandemic is “hypocritical,” Senator Marco Rubio, of R-Fla said Thursday.
“The day after Donald Trump issued a travel ban on China, Joe Biden said the time was not for xenophobia and that sort of thing,” Rubio told Fox & Friends. .
Rubio added: “And then a month later he actually tweeted that the anywhere travel ban was not working.”

Rubio reacted to the Miami Herald headline “White House Examines National Travel Restrictions As COVID Mutation Rises in Florida.”
“The Biden administration is considering whether to impose restrictions on domestic travel, including to Florida, fearing that coronavirus mutations threaten to reverse hard-fought progress on the pandemic,” the Herald reported.
Additionally, Rubio tore up the Biden administration for considering restricting interstate travel across the country.
“So now that they are considering real restrictions on Americans inside the country, I think it’s unconstitutional,” Rubio said. “I think this will be successfully challenged in court.”

Last month, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said it was unfair to claim that President Biden called his predecessor’s coronavirus travel ban “xenophobic,” despite statements indicating that this was in fact his vision for this policy.
“I don’t think that’s quite a right articulation,” she told Fox News’s Peter Doocy, who reiterated Biden’s use of the term “xenophobic”. Doocy’s comment came just after the White House announced a travel ban from South Africa linked to the coronavirus.
“The president made it clear that he believed the Muslim ban was xenophobic,” Psaki said. “He rescinded the Muslim ban. He also, however, supported measures, travel restrictions in order to keep the American people safe, to ensure that we brought the pandemic under control. It was part of his policy, but he criticized the former president for having a policy that was no more comprehensive than travel restrictions. “
