Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) opposes Tennessee's decision to honor Nathan Klass Kund, confederate general, slave trader and first wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, as "false".

Earlier this week, Gov. Bill Lee (right) signed a statement proclaiming Saturday "Nathan Bedford Forrest Day" and praising him as "a recognized military figure of American history and a native of Tennessean."

On Friday, Cruz highlighted Forrest's antecedents in a tweet demanding that the state amend its law that requires the governor to declare several specific recognition days each year. In addition to Forrest, the state also has days to honor Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate Army, and Andrew Jackson, who owned slaves.

Echoing Cruz's criticism, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) Called on the governor to bring the state into the "21st century" rather than "going back to the nineteenth century".

Despite the critics, Lee says the Tennessean he did not seriously consider changing the law.

"I did not even look at this law, if it was not to know that I had to respect it, that's what I did," he said. "When we look at the law, then we will see."
