Senator Amy Klobuchar said misinformation on social media about Covid-19 vaccines adds urgency to her call to change accountability standards for what is posted on their platforms.
“There is absolutely no reason why they should not be able to better monitor this and take this shit off their platforms, ”she said on CNN’s“ State of the Union ”Sunday.
President Joe Biden said on Friday that the platforms were “killing people” by allowing the spread of false information about the shootings.
“I really appreciate President Biden calling this,” said the Democratic senator from Minnesota.
Klobuchar suggested using antitrust laws to “look back and see if they should divest any assets so that we can have real competition” with “dominant” social media platforms, she said on Sunday.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said on Sunday he had spoken to the platforms and would continue to ask them to take responsibility for disinformation on the sites.
“Disinformation continues to spread like wildfire in our country, aided and abetted by technology platforms,” Murthy said on “Fox News Sunday”. He published an advisory last week, drawing attention to health misinformation that has led to preventable illness and death.
Facebook Inc. has rebuffed Biden’s comment, saying he would not be blamed if the administration missed its goal of vaccinating 70% of Americans by July 4. information.
Earlier this year, Senator Klobuchar, along with Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Mazie Hirono, introduced a bill to target Section 230, seeking to facilitate the prosecution of social media platforms for harmful content.
