NASA is offering the public the opportunity to send its names – stencilled on chips – with the Mars 2020 mobile mission. The launch of the rover is scheduled for July 2020. The satellite is expected to land on Mars in February 2021.

NASA will use an electron beam to mark the submitted names on a silicon chip with lines of text less than one-thousandth the width of a human hair (75 nanometers). At this size, it is possible to write over a million names on a single chip the size of a tenth. The chip (or chips) will roll on the mobile under a glass cover.

Until September 30, you can add your name to the list (and get a souvenir boarding pass for Mars) here.

NASA said the robotic robot would look for signs of past microbial life, characterize the climate and geology of the planet, take samples for a future return to Earth and pave the way for human exploration of Mars.

When you register to send your name, you receive a souvenir boarding card and "loyalty points". Miles (or kilometers) are awarded for each "flight", with corresponding digital mission patches available for download. More than 2 million people participated in NASA's InSight mission to Mars, giving each "traveler" about 300 million miles (about 500 million kilometers).

Conclusion: how to register to send your name to Mars with NASA's 2020 mobile mission.
