(CIO Mag) – In Africa, the mobile penetration rate is 82% (104% globally), with 14 million new mobile subscriptions by the 3rde quarter of 2018. According to the new Ericsson Mobility Report presented, Wednesday, November 28, 2018, via videoconference to journalists Ivorian and Senegalese, this increase is partly related to the phenomenon of multi-equipment and the multiplicity of SIM cards per subscriber.

Deploying the 5G
According to forecasts in the new Ericsson Report, 5G is expected to cover more than 40% of the world's population by the end of 2024, reaching 1.5 billion subscribers.
In Africa, 5G commercialization has begun with some major service providers. However, "5G subscriptions in visible volume are expected from 2024," said Nora Wahby.

North America and North-East Asia should play a leading role in this growth, says the document which adds that 5G will represent in North America 55% of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2024. In Asia Northeast, it will exceed 43%. In Western Europe, 5G is expected to capture around 30% of mobile subscriptions in the region by the end of 2024.
According to the Ericsson study, 90% of mobile subscriptions should be broadband by 2024 in both the Middle East and Africa. Two similar markets, explains Nora Wahby, because of the proximity of the consumption habits, in particular between countries of the Middle East as Turkey and Iran and African countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal.
Driven by the adoption of communication goods and services, the generalization of mobility in Africa and the Middle East should double the number of smartphone subscriptions, "which would increase the penetration rate from 45% to 70% in 2024, "commented the head of Ericsson West Africa.
It also shows that VoLTE subscriptions will reach nearly $ 1.4 billion by the end of 2018, with operators introducing a wide range of new service use cases.
Data traffic
In global mobile data traffic, Ericsson saw a 79% increase ine quarter of 2018, compared to the same period of the previous year.
In Africa and the Middle East, the average monthly mobile data traffic is expected to increase from 2.9 GB today to 15 GB by 2024, with a strong consumption of video services and 5G. According to Nora Wahby, the length of time we watch video has increased to 60% of the traffic. A rate that should reach 70% in 2024.
This traffic will be multiplied by nine in 2024, against five at the global level, representing the highest growth rate in the world.

Cellular IoT connections
For the Internet of Things or Connected Objects (IoT or IoT), the Ericsson Report reports that cellular IoT connections are expected to exceed 4 billion in six years. This is due to the boom in NB-IoT and Cat-M1 technologies.
