The Institute of Environmental Sciences and the Ucad Institute of Earth Sciences have launched a Master's degree in Environment and Management of Mining Discharges. The first class will start in the academic year 2018-2019
The first cohort of the Master Environment and Management of Mining Discharge, set up by the Institute of Environmental Sciences (Ise) and the Institute of Ucad Earth Sciences (Ist), will begin its training from the 2018-2019 academic year. It was officially launched on July 5, 2018, in the offices of the Quebec Office in Dakar, in the presence of the authorities of the Ministries of Environment, Mines, Higher Education and representatives of Ucad [19659002] This new training offer aims at providing Senegal with quality human resources capable of taking into account the negative externalities generated by the exploitation of mineral resources. Especially that the latter, according to Professor Bienvenu Sambou, director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences, is not without risks. It entails, he said, environmental impacts that affect ecosystems, biodiversity and water resources. These numerous rejections must be managed more rationally by specialists in the field. In two years, these experts will be on the market thanks to this joint Master's degree from Ise and Ist, with the support of the École polytechnique de Montréal (Canada) and the mining companies.
With the new discoveries of oil and gas, informed Professor Sambou, Senegal will need quality human resources in the field of the management of mining discharges. Through this new training, he said, Ucad wants to make its contribution to the implementation of mining policy in Senegal. "This Master is timely. It will promote a more responsible mining activity, "said the director of Ise. For a good success of this Master, the director of Ist, Prof. Abdou Aziz Ndiaye, asked the collaboration of the extractive sector. "We want the support of the extractive sector financially but also in terms of pedagogical support. This Master requires the granting of mining scholarships for the most deserving, "he pleaded. Indeed, it is open to students trained in geology, hydrology and physics-chemistry, but also to those trained on environmental, ethical, health, economic and social issues, governance and sustainable development.
Mamadou Sidibé, representing the rector of the Ucad, informed that the assembly of the university adopted, since December 20, 2017, all the texts relating to this Master Environment and Management of the mining discharges and that the training will start as soon as 2018-2019.
