Senegalese prisons explode and reached a new historical record, with 10,083 prisoners while the 37 prisons in the country have only 4224 places. That is a surplus of 5859 inmates. Walf Quotidien, who gives these figures quoting the Ministry of Justice's 2017-2018 activity report, points out that the detainees are distributed as follows: 9546 men, 336 women and 201 minors. In terms of prison overcrowding, Rebeuss is in the lead with 2279 residents for only 469 places. It is followed by the prison of Thiès which welcomes 1,126 prisoners for 337 places The Camp penal of Dakar is positioned in 3 th place with 971 prisoners who share a space planned for 358. The Mac of Kaolack is populated of 600 prisoners whereas it had to contain only 270. It follows the prisons of Diourbel (472), Tamba (462), Saint-Louis (461), Ziguinchor (287) and Kolda (280). And to monitor all these detainees, Senegal has only 1,087 prison guards.
