Google is once again in the line of fire of consumer groups, and for good reason, the research glove would have failed to comply with the European regulation on the protection of personal data (RGPD). Implemented on May 25th, the RGPD is a regulation which constitutes the reference text in the matter of personal data protection. It strengthens and unifies the protection of data for individuals within the European Union.
Six months after the entry into force of this regulation, the European Bureau of Consumer Unions (BEUC), which reports for consumer protection groups in the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden, accuses Google to track the movements and online browsing of users without giving them the choice to opt or not for this practice.
These unfair practices leave consumers unclear about the use of their personal data. These practices do not respect the RGPD (…) Users do not freely give their permission to use their data, says BEUC.
If these allegations are confirmed, Google could be sentenced to pay a heavy fine of 4% of its annual revenues, or $ 4 billion if we refer to the results of the search engine in 2017. Consumer protection groups have complained to of their respective national data protection authorities.
Following these complaints, Google informed that the location tracking function was not active by default and could be changed at any time.
We are constantly working on ways to improve our control, and we will read this report carefully to see if there are things we can take into account, "said a spokesman for Google.
This new bounce comes a few months after an investigation that showed Google records location data of users who have activated privacy settings to prevent the recording of these data. Google has subsequently confirmed the suspicions of this practice, and said that disabling the history of locations without disabling another parameter named Web and App Activity (which is enabled by default and stores app data and sites on your Google Account) you only guarantees that your daily trips will not be added anymore.
