Netflix will produce an animated adaptation of the most famous novels of the British writer Roald Dahl, including "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Matilda" or "The BGG – The Good Big Giant", according to a statement released Tuesday.
The platform has an agreement with the heirs of the giant of children's literature who died in 1990, who has sold more than 200 million books worldwide.
Most of his works have already been the subject of many adaptations, theater and cinema, including "Charlie", on the big screen first in 1971 and another in 2005.
For the most successful, it was transpositions with real actors, with the exception of "Fantastic Mr Fox", filmed according to the process of "stop-motion" or animation in volume.
Stay true to the original spirit
The adaptations of Netflix will not be movies but series in several episodes, based on the books of Roald Dahl, in which the platform will "tap".
"Netflix wants to stay true to the spirit and tone of the author, while creating an original universe that goes beyond the books," said the online video service in its joint statement with Roald Dahl's heirs.
"Our mission, purposefully ambitious, is to allow as many children as possible to discover the unique magic and positive message that comes from Roald Dahl's stories," said Felicity Dahl, widow of the writer, quoted in the release. .
"Our ambition is to reinvent the adventures of many of Dahl's iconic characters in innovative and contemporary ways," said Melissa Cobb, vice president of children and family content at Netflix.
The agreement covers 16 titles in total.
The production of the first animated series based on Roald Dahl's universe is set to begin in 2019.
