(Agence Ecofin) – Tunisia's National Telecommunications Authority (INT) will launch a new regulatory service tomorrow, November 29, 2018, which will enable telecom subscribers to limit the volume of advertising SMS received from telecom companies.

The service called "STOP SMS", is the result of an agreement signed last April, between the telecom regulator and the National Instance of Protection of Personal Data (INPDP) and the Consumer Protection Organization (ODC). It is executable through a toll-free number that INT will make public Thursday.

For subscribers unhappy with the many promotional and advertising messages received all day long and even late at night, the action of the telecoms regulator reflects a stronger involvement in protecting the interests of consumers. Alongside the INPDP, the new INT service also reflects a reminder to Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi on the use of consumers' personal data.

Article 27 of Organic Law No 63 of 27 July 2004 on the protection of personal data stipulates that "Except for cases provided for by this law or the laws in force, the processing of personal data may only be carried out with the express written consent of the person concerned".
