Ziguinchor, Nov 29 (APS) – Landings of fish products in the Ziguinchor region (south) are estimated at 64,810 tons in 2017, with an estimated commercial value of 23.39 billion CFA francs, said Thursday the Minister of Fisheries Fishing and Maritime Economy, Oumar Guèye.
"Fishing plays a vital role in the economy of the natural region of Casamance.With more than 2,000 canoes active in 2017, landings in the Ziguinchor region are estimated at 64,810 tons", said Mr. Guèye.
He was speaking at the launch of the work of the fishing port of Boudody, a district of Ziguinchor.
The ceremony was held in the presence of local and administrative authorities, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Senegal Theo Peters, MPs from the region, elected officials and several stakeholders in the fisheries sector.
"The commercial value of these landings is more than 23.39 billion CFA francs, and the landings of Ziguinchor account for 16.35% of the national fisheries production," said Oumar Guèye.
He reports that the Ziguinchor region ranks third in terms of landings, behind Thiès and Dakar.
