Tambacounda, July 12 (APS) – A delegation of the National Commission to Fight Small Arms and Light Weapons started Thursday, in Tambacounda, an awareness campaign to collect illegal weapons or seized from populations with purpose of destruction.
The purpose of this campaign is to inform and sensitize authorities, opinion leaders and local gun owners about the need to collect illicit weapons and voluntarily surrender those held by civilians, to foster an environment of peace and security in the country.
"We want to promote and encourage the involvement of local, religious or customary authorities and local populations to facilitate the voluntary surrender of weapons by civilians," said Honoré Georges Ndiaye, a member of the National Commission against small arms and light weapons
He indicated that the populations were trained during the campaigns of the National Commission on the procedures in force regarding the harbor and possession of weapons.
This campaign, focused on the theme "Collection of obsolete weapons or seizures, registration, marking and destruction of arms of Senegal", concerns the cities of Dakar, Thies, Mbour, Ziguinchor, Bignona, Kedougou, Saint -Louis and Tambacounda.
The National Commission to Fight Small Arms and Light Weapons has destroyed fifty weapons since its establishment, Honoré Geoges Ndiaye said.
It states that the weapon holders have freely decided to voluntarily surrender their weapons for the purpose of destruction.
