Dakar, Nov 29 (APS) – Algeria's Mustapha Berraf was elected president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) on Thursday, replacing Ivorian Lassana Palenfo, according to news reports. media.

With 34 out of 54 votes, the Algerian ahead of the Burundian Lydia Nsekera (20 votes), a member of the Council of Fifa, in the second round of voting, the Cameroonian Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, president of the African Confederation Athletics (CAA) having been eliminated in the first round.

Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, at the head of the Olympic Committee of Cameroon, had for a year been acting president of ANOCA, following the imbroglio born of the re-election of his predecessor Lassana Palenfo in 2017.

The Ivorian leader who had led ANOCA for 12 years had been re-elected in an atmosphere of defiance following the invalidation of Malboum's candidacy.

The decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in favor of Malboum in this case had pushed General Palenfo to withdraw, the international Olympic movement being then obliged to organize this Thursday a new election in Tokyo which will house in 2020 Summer Olympics.

The new president of ANOCA, who has been acting since 2017, has managed to complete several dossiers, including the attribution of the 2019 African Games to Morocco in place of Equatorial Guinea.

The 64-year-old former basketball player had previously been in the shadow of General Palenfo.
