The head of the bank's operations in the United States will take office from December 31, 2018 and will oversee the group's digital transformation.
This appointment was widely expected, Carlos Torres having already been appointed to the executive presidency of the group to replace Francisco Gonzalez.
"BBVA's board of directors chose Onur because it is the ideal CEO to continue to advance our strategy and accelerate our transformation across all our franchises," the group said in a statement.
This appointment confirms BBVA's strategy of offering more digital services.
