"Le Grand Échiquier", a cult program hosted by Jacques Chancel for almost two decades, will be reborn on December 20 on France 2, with Anne-Sophie Lapix at the helm of a new formula that aims to introduce the public to the best of culture via the courses of three exceptional artists.
For this first issue, which will be broadcast live from 21:00 from the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France 2 has put the dishes in the big: the show will offer two hours thirty live, with as main guests l actor Daniel Auteuil, former ballet dancer and director of the Paris Opera Ballet Aurélie Dupont, and the couple formed by tenor Roberto Alagna and soprano Aleksandra Kurzak.
The channel had decided this year to resurrect this legendary broadcast of the public service, broadcast from 1972 to 1989 on the ORTF then Antenne 2, by appealing to the company 3e Oeil ("C'est à vous" …), which the leader Pierre-Antoine Capton was close to Jacques Chancel.
3rd Eye had already produced three years ago a tribute to the presenter of the "Grand Échiquier", disappeared at the end of 2014. This program broadcasted in the second half of the evening on La Deux had gathered more than a million viewers, a sign of interest public.
For this new version, which will be hosted by Anne-Sophie Lapix, presenter of the 20H France 2, "we kept the fundamentals", but rethinking the formula of the show, told AFP Justine Planchon, director 3rd Eye programs.
The new "Grand Échiquier", broadcast at the rate of 4 issues per year, will welcome three great guests, from different backgrounds. With the help of artists who have nourished their career or whose work they appreciate, they will propose original creations live, accompanied by a symphony orchestra (the Lille National Orchestra for the first edition), all served by sets and lights very worked.
The show will also reveal excerpts of shows that have marked the cultural season.
The ambition is to offer viewers "the best of culture" through sequences "of great beauty", and in an atmosphere of "pleasure and good mood," says Anne-Laure Sugier, editor-in-chief of this new version.
If this project is a bet, at a time when there are few cultural programs on television, especially in prime time, the show's team hopes to seduce the public by setting the bar high, "by fetching in each areas the best and sharing it to the greatest number, "she says.
While appealing to artists of the highest level, "it is a non-elitist culture that we will tell, a culture open to all and family, we want to emerge young talents by mixing them with confirmed artists" says Justine Planchon.
It is also the first issue that France 2 entrusted to Anne-Sophie Lapix in addition to the presentation of the "20H", which she took over the reins last year. The host, well known to 3rd Eye teams, since she presented "C to you" for 4 years, had the ideal profile according to the production company, with its experience as a journalist and facilitator.
