Newly co-opted into the new wrestling Cng, Yakhya Diop "Yekini" intends to share her experience and expertise for the development of all forms of wrestling. On the organization of the fighting, the former "King of arenas" believes that the Cng, like the promoters, must be better involved in this niche.
You are co-opted into the new team of the National Management Committee (Cng) wrestling. Why did you agree to join this committee?
I think the answer is simple. Those who thought I could bring my expertise and experience as a former wrestler, simply felt that I could accompany this team. The latter felt that this would be a good thing for the future of the Senegalese struggle.
What prompted you to accept this mission?
It must be understood that the struggle has had its ups and downs. Today, everyone believes that the struggle is going through a difficult period. While it must overcome this kind of difficulties and regain the momentum it provided to the sports world not to say to the Senegalese. It is for this reason that actors, like me and others, have been chosen to help develop the discipline. And that's also why I accepted to join this committee. I believe that this is also valid for the others who have been chosen.
Personally what do you think you can bring to the fight within this team?
I was a wrestler and I can tell you that the wrestlers respect the promoters more than the Cng. Simply because they are the ones who pay them stamps. Now for these promoters to do their job properly, they rely on the organization of Cng. So, if the wrestlers respect the promoters more, it means that there is work to be done within the Cng to reverse the situation. It is a job that this new team should be able to accomplish so that the wrestlers have more recognition and consideration towards the Cng.
Do you think this will be an easy task, since the promoters are often in direct contact with the wrestlers?
I think that can be done. In a good harmony between the Cng team that was in place and the one that just arrived, the trend could quickly be reversed. It should not be forgotten that Cng used to organize "souvenir tournaments". I want to say that Cng would benefit from getting more involved in organizing wrestling matches and not just leaving them to the promoters.
Would it be enough to revive the struggle?
Not at all. It's just the starting point. There are other criteria that must be taken into account, such as warnings. I do not have to talk about it too much because these are things we have to talk about in the office. For example, on the case of the warnings and other financial sanctions that wrestlers have denounced repeatedly and quite rightly elsewhere, I believe that a solution to this problem is needed.
In the recommendations of the tutelage, we are already talking about a drop of 15 to 10% …
That's true and that's why I say I can not go too far on the subject. These are things that we will discuss in an office meeting. Although the Cng has a spokesperson.
You had the privilege of practicing the three disciplines, simple wrestling, wrestling and Olympic wrestling. Where will Yekini be more useful?
It must be understood that the fight is not only that with strikes. There is the simple fight, but also the Olympic fight. The Minister of Sports expects medals in Olympic wrestling. It's a job to do in this area. In fact, the yard is vast. But what is clear is that I will not be the coach of a wrestler. I am only a simple advisor. For example, if Abdou Badji (National Technical Director) needs my advice, I will share my expertise with him. It will be the same for other forms of struggle.
How was the first meeting of the Cng last Monday?
It was just a contact. We exchanged and everyone understood that we had a mission to lead. Otherwise, there was nothing special. Now the season will begin soon (December 9th). In the coming days, I believe that serious things will begin and everyone will come with his ideas for the smooth running of the fight.
Would it be an illusion to tell fans that the fight will be reborn?
First, we must not say that the struggle is dead. This is not the right word. She just had a very difficult time. There are no more posters as before. Wrestlers do not have a lot of fights. All this is true, but I believe that the struggle can only move forward. We can not compare the fight against football, but what wrestling provides as an emotion at the national level, football can not bring it, except the National Team. So if we bring the right solutions to this discipline, it can only go forward.
What will it be necessary to do then?
That's all of what I just said. Firstly, the Cng should be more involved in the organization, review the rules and more. This is what allows to measure the beauty of this discipline. And the craze around it will inevitably come back. And advertisers will come back naturally. In short, that's what it takes. It's my point of view.
In recent days, your name is associated with the private TV 2Stv. You even invited Baba Maal on a show. Have you joined the 2Stv?
I just want to say that El Hadji Ndiaye is a big brother and a friend. We thought we could do something for the 2Stv on reports and others. On the show with Baba Maal, I was just invited and I came to participate. I think it must go on the show of Boubs. But I specify that I have no show and I have not signed any contract. But with El Hadji Ndiaye, we are very connected.
Do you work together for a project?
We think about what we can do together.
Still with the 2Stv?
Yes !
Is it possible to see you tomorrow animate a show on the 2Stv?
I do not know ! But I remain available whenever El Hadji Ndiaye will need me. However, it will not be part of the fight.
