Nearly two million people are carriers of hepatitis B and C viruses in Senegal. These figures were revealed by the coordinator of the National Program against Hepatitis (PNLH), Professor Aminata Sall Diallo.
"There are 1.8 million carriers, or nearly 2 million individuals carrying hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus, "said Pr Aminata Sall Diallo, coordinator of the PNLH, at the Regional Development Committee (CRD) on the preparation of the 2018 edition of the national day of struggle against hepatitis, expected July 28.
According to her, in terms of public health, when we say that 10% of the population of Senegal are chronic carriers of the hepatitis B virus, that makes 1.5 million individuals affected by this disease. "And when we say that 2% of the general population is infected with the hepatitis C virus, we have 300,000 carriers," Diallo said.
According to Pr Aminata Sall Diallo, with nearly 2 million carriers, to be treated by the only doctors residing in Dakar, this is not possible. It is necessary that one trains all the doctors for the care of these patients.
Thus, Mrs. Diallo to support that this year, the town of Niakhar will host the official ceremony in the presence of the Minister of Health and of Social Action, Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr. "At the end of this national day in Niakhar, we will return to Fatick to train doctors on optimal care for patients in the region," she said.
For the Pr, near two million carriers of hepatitis B and C viruses is a lot. We can not continue to send everyone to Dakar. "The solution, for her, will now be to decentralize medical care in the regions. Everything was done in Dakar, from the care of the sick, the supervision of the sick, to the distribution of medicines. And for the first time in our history, we are going to decentralize all these activities to Niakhar level, first of all through this day, "she said.
