(Invest in Cameroon) – Banana producers operating in Cameroon exported a global shipment of 113,600 tonnes at the end of June 2018, according to statistics revealed by the Cameroon Banana Association (Assobacam). Compared with 140 930 tonnes exported during the same period in 2017, exports in the first half of 2018 fell by more than 27 000 tonnes.

This performance is mainly due to the public agroprocessor CDC (Cameroon Development Corporation), number 2 of the banana market and 2 th employer of the country after the Civil Service.

Indeed, during the period under review, this company saw its exports culminate in Only 29,600 tonnes, compared with 50,563 tonnes a year earlier, down almost 21,000 tonnes.

On the analysis, this continued underperformance (its exports had already fallen by 19,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2018) from CDC, following the slowing down of its activities, because of the violence imposed by English-speaking secessionists on the populations of the South-West region of the country, where the rubber plantations are located. and bananas of this public enterprise.

Moreover, the CDC is not the only banana producer to have seen its exports plummet in the first half of 2018. The statistics of Assobacam also reveal that the exports of the company Plantations of Haut Penja (PHP), the market leader, are also declining.

Indeed, this subsidiary of the Compagnie Fruitière de Marseille was able to export only 78 000 tonnes of bananas at the end of June 2018, against 84,167 tons in the first half of 2017, down just over 6,000 tons; the equivalent of the quantities exported over the first six months of the year by Boh Plantations, the small pinch of the Cameroon dessert banana market.
