Intel has released its first driver compliant with the new Universal Windows Drivers (UWD) standard imposed by Microsoft since October Update. Renamed Windows Modern Drivers by the manufacturer, this new driver package is only supported on Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server 2019.

Past almost unnoticed, certainly due to the many problems with the October Update, Microsoft now imposes the use of Universal Windows Drivers since it was updated to version 1809. This new initiative initiated by Microsoft is intended to enable IT component vendors to produce a single driver package for multiple device types based on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) platform, all accessible directly via Windows Update.

Intel graphics drivers are moving to the universal!

Intel is the first manufacturer to show its willingness to comply with Microsoft's UWD initiative. Thus, all future drivers published by Intel will now follow this universal model. A first UWD graphics driver named Intel Graphics Driver 25.20.100.6444 it has already been published on November 26th, and concerns processors and graphic controllers for the Skylake, Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Gemini Lake and Apollo Lake ranges. This UWD driver also supports 12 new games that can also be optimized thanks to the function Rescan via the Intel graphical control panel without this requiring a system reboot.

For users who are unsure of wanting to install this new driver – which can be understood if one takes into account that the update to the version 1809 of Windows is still suspended on systems still running versions 24.20. 100.6344 and 24.20.100.6345 graphics drivers from Intel – Intel says it will still be possible to return to legacy drivers, but it will however be careful because "the backtracking is not recommended because it involves a complex process that can lead to system instability ".

At this time, this version 25.20.100.6444 is only available for Windows 10 64 bits. For more information, go directly to the Windows Modern Drivers download page.
