#Mauritania : Initially declared out of use as of July 01, 2018, the ranges of the old ouguiya (pieces of 10, 20 and 50 ouguiyas) remain valid until November 30, 2018, announces a release of the Central Bank of Mauritania (BCM), made public on Thursday.

The release of the BCM gives a mid-term evaluation "of the reform that has had encouraging results: recovery of more than 96% of the mass in circulation of the old range, a considerable increase in the deposits of banks and the opening of more than 15,000 new bank accounts. "

Justifying the extension of the period of validity of the old range of ouguiya, the BCM adds that "these results confirm an observed trend which is characterized by a low recovery of the low denominations of the old range, including the coins of 10, 20 and 50 ouguiyas, which are mainly held by low-income populations

Thus, the cessation of circulation of these names would affect these vulnerable segments of the population and would eventually lead to an unjustified rise in the rate of inflation.

The communiqué of the BCM indicates that this reform was "welcomed by the users of our national currency, and the international and regional partners," and recalls that it is "focused on two major components: the generalization of the
polymer on all bank notes and the change in the base of the national currency ".
