Eating nuts is a simple but useful advice for couples wanting to start a family. This funny conclusion results from a scientific report of this beginning of the month. Spanish researchers conducted the survey on just over 100 young men aged 18 to 35. Scientists divided them into two groups: some kept their usual Western diet without nuts; others also but supplemented with 60 grams a day of a mixture of almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts. After 14 weeks, the results of the survey show a marked improvement in sperm quality for the second group of men.
Sperm quality?
Sperm quality is assessed using different criteria: the quantity, vitality, mobility and morphology of the spermatozoa present in the body fluid. The results of the study show an improvement of all these criteria in the men of the second group. These four factors are important in male fertility. Indeed, the higher the number of good quality spermatozoa, the greater the chance to fertilize the egg. Obviously, the quality of sperm is not the only determining factor. Many other factors come into play in the design of the future baby. It is therefore difficult to make this diet a recommendation for all future fathers.
Are there other ways to improve sperm quality?
Not really. Some vitamins containing zinc, selenium and B vitamins are offered to couples who have difficulty starting a family. These dietary supplements have not really proven their effectiveness. However, evidence is accumulating in research that changes in favor of a healthier life, such as having a healthy diet or playing a sport on a regular basis, could help design. Other notable facts: smoking cessation and weight loss in overweight people would increase the chances of conceiving a child.
