The goal of increasing the energy mix to 42% in Morocco in 2020 is on track to be achieved, with the new figures revealed Wednesday in Rabat, by Aziz Rabbah, Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development , which reported a rate of 35% at the end of 2018.

Morocco is engaged in a very satisfactory energy transition, which has been marked by a reduction in energy dependence from 98% in 2008 to 93% currently. This performance is mainly due to the rise of renewable energy, said Aziz Rabbah on the occasion of a media day initiated by the ministry.

He noted the continued evolution of energy demand over the last decade, with an annual rate of 4.1% and an energy bill of 69 MMDH in 2017.

To meet the growing demand, the energy strategy also takes into account energy efficiency and the promotion of regional integration.

By 2030, the ministry is counting on the development of an additional capacity of about 10,000 MW of renewable energy, divided between solar (4,500 MW), wind (4,200 MW) and hydroelectric (1,300 MW), noted M Rabbah.

The main energy consumers are the transportation sector (38%), construction (33%) and the industrial sector (21%), said the minister, mentioning programs that will lead to energy savings around 20% by 2030, targeting the most energy-intensive sectors.
