The World Food Program (WFP) received a $ 1 million donation from the US government of more than 560 million F CFA to assist 22,000 families in the Matam region (north) the lean season.

In a statement received Tuesday at APA, WFP says that more than 66,000 people in the regions of Saint-Louis and Matam affected by the negative effects of climate change have started receiving food assistance. It is a targeted assistance to cover the food and nutritional needs of the most vulnerable people during the lean season.

WFP expresses its gratitude to the US Government for its support and reminds that the departments of Podor and Matam (north) have, among other things, been declared very vulnerable to food and nutrition insecurity and this following the results of the harmonized framework of March 2018.

The UN organization has defined a support plan based on cash transfers, nutritional support and the creation of sustainable community assets to support the Government of Senegal in implementing its Emergency Plan for Food Security (PUSA) for the most vulnerable populations in the regions of northern Senegal

These activities will help to better fight against food insecurity, malnutrition and the resilience of affected communities in these two departments, concludes the statement.
