"Despite the elimination of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th placeits and the introduction of a 3rd prize, 114 distinctions (were noted) against 148 in 2017, including 27 accessits from 3rd to 7th. (…) These 114 distinctions are awarded to 101 laureates including 55 girls and 46 boys, "said Serigne Mbaye Thiam, in press briefing this afternoon to communicate the results of the 2018 edition of this competition and on the preparation of the awards ceremony scheduled for Thursday, August 02, in Dakar.

Following the announcement of these results, the Minister indicated that the best student in the 2018 open competition is Miss Diary Sow, a student in class from First S1 to the new Scientific High School of Excellence of Diourbel (center).

With a total of 59.75 points, the schoolgirl won 1st prize in Citizenship and Human Rights (16/20) and 2nd in Sciences of Life and Earth (15/20), and the 2nd Accessit in Physical Sciences (16/20) and Mathematics (12,75 / 20).

This year, 2179 candidates have written on the all-around events (17 disciplines in First class and 15 in Te rminale), of which 1,284 in First with 780 girls and 504 boys and 895 in Terminale with 465 girls and 430 boys. The number of candidates was 3023, in 2017, in this competition for which the student, to be presented, must have a general average semester at least equal to 12/20 and an average of 14/20 at least in the chosen discipline

For the first time as well, students wrote in the physical sciences and in life and earth sciences for the First Classes, the minister added, before adding that in the final year, the French and manufacturing analysis were introduced.

"It can also be noted that students in the scientific series, and particularly those in the S1 series, have again this year won most of the honors, including in the disciplines usually dedicated to literary series such as philosophy, French, German, English, history, geography, both first and final, "said Thiam.

Moreover, he underlined that the classification between institutions "was suppressed" according to the decree of February 20, 2018, explaining that it "risked relegating in the background the performances of our best students for whom the General Competition was instituted" by the decree 61-213 of May 30, 1961, modified by the decree 61-454 of December 04, 1961.

Nevertheless, Serigne Mbaye Thiam dwelled on "the fulgurating breakthrough of the pupils of the Scientific high school of Excellence of Diourbel which participate for the first time at the Concours Général ". In fact, of the 114 distinctions, 34 went to public institutions of excellence recruiting through national competition and 80 to others.

The Minister's statistics also show that 75 distinctions were won by public institutions and 39 by private schools.

Focusing on the theme "Digital educational resources: opportunities and prospects", the 2018 edition of the Senegalese general competition is sponsored by the Senegalese historian, Pr Iba Der Thiam.
